By on October 14, 2013

Whether or not you have heard of her, one look at Danai Gurira and certain words come to mind – exotic, natural, powerful, and strong! Danai was born to Zimbabwean parents in Iowa State located in the United States. She grew up in the States and has excelled in the Arts. She has guest starred in popular TV shows such as Law & Order and Life on Mars. However, she is best known for her role as Michonne in the hit drama series 'The Walking Dead'.

The Zimbabwean-American actress has won awards for her writing as well as her acting. However, all the success hasn't slowed this classically trained actress down. She recently starred as the leading actress in an independent film titled 'Mother of George'. In the role, Danai plays a newly wed Nigerian immigrant based in Brooklyn, New York and strugling with fertility issues. The movie opens in select cities this fall across the US and Danai has already received rave reviews for her work.

People Magazine named Danai one of the world's most beautiful in April 2013. She was also recently featured in Essence Magazine where she did a fashion spread. Her short hairstyle is one striking feature Danai boldly embraces. She shaved off her hair about a decade ago and hasn't since looked back. Check out this behind the scences clip where she talks about hair with Essence.com:

We can say that Danai Gurira is definitely an inspiration to young black women and African women in particular. In 2011, she co-founded Almasi, an organization dedicated to continuing arts education in Zimbabwe. Keep up the great work Danai; you make us proud!
