Prince William, Africa Is Not A Bush!

By on August 23, 2013

Prince William told CNN in a video released earlier this week, that his newborn son, baby George, will have an African-themed bedroom. The revelation was made during an hour long interview set to air on September 15 and titled Prince William's Passion: New Father, New Hope.

The 31 year old new dad shared that "I'll have toy elephants and rhinos around the room." He further went on to say "…we'll cover it in lots of bushes and things like that, make him grow up as if he's in the bush."

People magazine also carried the story with the intro "Prince George is about to be welcomed to the jungle". Comments to the article on their facebook page had lots of people referring to the baby as 'Prince George of the Jungle'.

While we can understand that Prince William does have a passion for saving endangered species in Africa, his statement about having his son grow up as if he's in the bush, insinuates that is what Africa is all about. Africa is not a bush! There is more to Africa than jungles, lions, elephants and rhinos.

Its no wonder that those in the west mostly equate Africa to the safari. I personally have received questions like " do your people live on trees?; do they have televisions?; how did you learn English?; etc" It's comments like these as well as what's portrayed on television in the west that give the perception that Africa has not made it into the 21st century.

What is your take on this?
