Nollywood’s Most Expensive Movie

Nollywood is booming! About 2,000 movies are produced each year by the Nigerian movie industry which ranks second in the world in movie production. But no other movie has created as much buzz on an international scale as the industry's most expensive movie – "Half A Yellow Sun". The movie has been deemed to be the most impressive and most expensive Nollywood movie to date with a budget of N1.27 billion, which comes to approximately $8 million! The average Nollywood movie costs between $17,000 – $23,000 and is shot on video within a week.

Half A Yellow Sun is an adaptation of the best selling book by the same name from famed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The novel has won Adichie the Orange Broadbrand Prize for Fiction. The story is set in the 1960s and follows the lives of 4 main characters through the civil war in an effort to bring about an independent republic of Nigeria. It was directed by celebrated Nigerian playwright Biyi Bandele and co-produced by Andrea Calderwood (Last King of Scotland) and Gail Ega (The Constant Gardner).

The movie boasts of an award winning cast – BAFTA award winner Thandie Newton and three time Golden Globe nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor. Its equally impressive supporting cast members include Anika Noni Rose, Genevieve Nnaji and Onyeka Onwenu. Selected to be the opening movie at the upcoming Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival in September, this epic film has all the makings of a blockbuster!
