Over the last few years, weaves and wigs have taken over the African market. Their versatility and overall look are some of the reasons that make the hair industry in Africa a $1 billion one. Women in African tend to gravitate towards to long flowing caucasian hair styles rather than their natural hair. Hair relaxers are also widely used though weaves have appeared to diminish their popularity. Regardless, there is a new trend which is fast rising – its the trend of Natural hair!

African women and Black women in general, are beginning to embrace their natural, kinky coils! They even refer to themselves as 'Naturalistas'! Though wearing natural hair hasn't yet made a wide spread entrance into the Nollywood industry, I believe we will see a change as views regarding what women perceive as being beautiful continue to evolve. One Nigerian celebrity who is putting natural black hair on the map is popular award winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Chimamanda is best known for her novel 'Half A Yellow Sun'. She boldly showcases different kinds of natural styles which sometimes opens the door to discuss the subject. In promoting her most recent book 'Americanah', Chimamanda in an interview with The Observer a few months ago, revealed her views on natural black hair. She said "My hair is in tiny cornrows; I have a big ponytail on the top of my head. I quite like it. It is natural. I am a bit of a fundamentalist when it comes to black women’s hair. Hair is hair – yet also about larger questions: self-acceptance, insecurity and what the world tells you is beautiful. For many black women, the idea of wearing their hair naturally is unbearable." I think wearing hair naturally is becoming more bearable with the various special hair care products now available.

In the Hollywood industry on the other hand, more black female celebrities are embracing their natural coils. They include Janelle Monae, Viola Davis, Jill Scott and even Michelle Obama at one point. Women in various works of life are beginning to rethink what true beauty is. We came across a video tutorial put together by a company which specializes in natural hair care products called As I Am Naturally. They walk viewers through various kinds of natural hair styles as well as the best way to care for them. We look forward to seeing how fair this new trend will go. Check out the video tutorial and various natural hair looks.
