How Omotala’s journey into Nollywood all started…

By on March 20, 2013

Fresh out of secondary school, the teenage Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde went into modelling
while she tarried to gain admission into the the university.
It was a door into the bigger, unplanned world of stardorm. How ready was she?
She was plucked from the runway , and thrust under the spotlight of the developing
Nollywood industry, "A friend of mine was going for an audition" she recalls, "and
she asked me to come along." The then teenage-beauty, easy on the eye, caught the
attention of the movie producer and director. It was not an easy transition. First, the
producers had to convince the starlet that she had the ability to rise to the top.
When they won her over, next opposition was her mother.
"I lost my father when i was 13" she said sadly. "So, with my father gone,
i had just my mum and my younger brothers… and she this huge responsibilty to bring
us up  decently .
With all the pressures from our extended family, she wanted to prove to them that she was
capable. So, when the producers convinced me, i told them my mother would not allow me.
As a testament to her quality, the producers went the extra mile to talk to her mother.
They had to assure her that the teenager was in safe hands, "For my mum, being an actress
was totally out of order. She was against it. It was 'NO!' NO!' from every angle…. I used to
get the beating of my life! Even when she would not spank me, it was nagging and talking,
yelling… What won her over was seeing all the big producers like Zeb Ejiro come to the house
to ask her permission . She got to know them one-on-one"
With her mother secure in her corner , Omotola's rise to stardom took off steadily. It has been
17 years, and 300 movies (circa) later, the multi-award winning actress can afford to look back
and analyze her illustrious movie career.
